Apple sued over iPhone 6 touch-screen freezes

Apple sued
A lawsuit filed in Silicon Valley federal court over the weekend accuses Apple of knowingly selling defective iPhone 6 models with screens that stop responding to touch.

Attorneys representing the three Apple smartphone owners named as plaintiffs in the litigation asked that the case be granted class-action status to represent anyone in the United States who has bought an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.
“This action arises from Apple’s concealment of a material design defect that causes the touchscreens on the iPhones to become unresponsive and fail for their essential purpose as smartphones,” the civil complaint contended.
The lawsuit accused Apple of refusing to repair iPhones free of charge despite knowing that a design flaw was a fault.
Apple did not respond to an AFP request for comment.
According to the lawsuit, chips that handle touchscreen input were not properly secured to logic boards and failed under normal wear-and-tear.
“The internet is replete with examples of blogs and other websites where consumers have complained of the exact same Touchscreen Defect within the iPhones,” the complaint maintained.
The lawsuit accuses Apple of a litany of violations including fraud and breach of implied warranty, and goes on to demand unspecified cash damages along with attorneys fees.
Damages sought in the suit include having the court order Apple to repair, recall, and/or replace the iPhones at issue.

#CarNews: nuTonomy launches world’s first driverless taxis and ride-hailing app

driverless taxinuTonomy, the leading developer of state-of-the art software for self-driving cars, launched the first-ever public trial of a robo-taxi service, on Thursday. The trial, which will continue on an on-going basis, is being held within Singapore’s one-north business district, where nuTonomy has been conducting daily autonomous vehicle (AV) testing since April.
Since its public trial began, select Singapore residents have been invited to use nuTonomy’s ride-hailing smartphone app to book a no-cost ride in a nuTonomy self-driving car that employs the company’s sophisticated software, which has been integrated with high-performance sensing and computing components. The rides will be provided in a Renault Zoe or Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric vehicle that nuTonomy has specially configured for autonomous driving. An engineer from nuTonomy will ride in the vehicle to observe system performance and assume control if needed to ensure passenger comfort and safety.
Throughout the trial, nuTonomy will collect and evaluate valuable data related to software system performance, vehicle routing efficiency, the vehicle booking process, and the overall passenger experience. This data will enable nuTonomy to refine its software in preparation for the launch of a widely-available commercial robo-taxi service in Singapore in 2018.
In addition to Singapore, nuTonomy is operating self-driving cars in Michigan and the United Kingdom, where it tests software in partnership with major automotive manufacturers such as Jaguar Land Rover.
