5 Ways to protect yourself from the Ebola virus

ebolaWith over 1 000 people infected, the Ebola outbreak in West Africa is said to be the deadliest outbreak in history!
Since the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that Ebola could spread to other countries, the world has been on high alert. In South Africa, the Department of Health assures us that there is no need to panic. “Our surveillance activities are extremely effective,” said Minister of Health, Aaron Motsoaldi.
However, if you are travelling to or returning from infected areas, here are five ways to protect yourself from the virus…

1. Recognise the symptoms

“Ebola is not contagious until symptoms appear,” explained Stephan Monroe, deputy director of the CDC’s National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases.
Symptoms include intense weakness, muscle pain, sudden fever, headaches, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, lack of appetite, kidney and liver failure and internal bleeding.
The Ebola virus can be contracted by physical contact with bodily fluids of an infected person . This included contact with mucous, semen, saliva, sweat, vomit, stools or blood.

2. Be aware that people who have recovered may still be infectious

Although the virus is fatal in as many as 90 per cent of cases, those who recover must exercise caution for at least two months as they may still be infectious.
Men who have recovered from the disease may still transmit the virus through their semen for up to seven weeks after recovery from illness, warns the WHO.

3. Avoid physical contact with deceased Ebola victims

Ebola has also spread to people who have come into physical contact with the bodies of people who died from the virus. The WHO advises that people who have died from Ebola should be promptly and safely buried.

4. Seek medical attention fast

People who have reason to believe that they have been infected should seek medical attention immediately and be isolated from the general public.
Most people who become infected with Ebola are those who live with and care for people who already have the disease and are showing symptoms.
All health care workers should follow infection control precautions by wearing face masks, gloves and long-sleeved gowns to shield themselves when treating patients. They should also take extra precautions with the safe disposal of needles and syringes.

5. Avoid contact with and the eating of bush meat

Ebola is thought to infect humans after close contact with the bodily fluids of infected animals.
According to the WHO, Ebola infection in Africa has been documented through the handling of infected chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats, monkeys, forest antelope and porcupines found ill or dead in the rainforest.
For this reason, people should avoid eating and handling bush meat.  If an outbreak is suspected on a pig or monkey farm, the WHO recommends immediate quarantine of the premises followed by a supervised culling and burial or incineration of the infected animals.

France remains the world’s favourite holiday destination

Eiffel-Tower-in-France

France welcomed 84.7 million foreign tourists in 2013 making it once again the most-visited country in the world, according to a study published Monday.
The figure topped the 2012 number by two percent, and meant that when it comes to attracting foreign visitors, France easily beats the United States and Spain who had 69.8 and 60.7 million foreign visitors each.
The study — which showed figures for France up from 83 million in 2012 — is published annually by the economy ministry’s DGCIS international competitiveness agency and by the central bank (Banque de France).
According to the report, France saw an increase in European tourists, of 1.2 percent on the previous year, driven by German and British visitors, although the number of tourists from Belgium, Luxembourg and crisis-hit Italy and Spain decreased.
After a big drop in 2012, North American tourists made a return, with the number of visitors crossing the Atlantic up by 5.8 percent.
However the biggest boom was seen in Asian visitors, with the number of Chinese tourists up by almost a quarter.
Asian tourists now number 4.5 million a year, up 13 percent, with Chinese visitor numbers in particular up by 23.4 percent to 1.7 million.
“Their interest in France has been proven in recent years, with the number of tourists doubling between 2009 and 2013,” the report said.
But the report was not unremitting good news for the French tourism sector.
While the study found that visitors have lengthened their stay in France, from an average of 6.9 to 7.1 nights per visit, it found that the number of nights spent in paid accommodation increased less rapidly, as visitors sought to stay with family and in apartment exchanges to save money.

Manchester United Bans Laptops, iPads and Tablet Devices at Old Trafford

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Thinking of taking in a Manchester United game at Old Trafford this season?
Better leave your iPad at home.
Citing “latest security intelligence,” United has added “large electronic devices including laptops and tablets” to the list of banned items for match days at its famous 76,100-seater stadium.
An email was circulated to fans ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Valencia, explaining the new measures which aren’t believed to be in operation at any other English club.
United says it is a special case.
“The scale of Old Trafford and profile of Manchester United mean that the risk at this venue is unique,” United said.
Sports fans are increasingly using iPads and similar devices to take photographs and videos in stadiums, raising fears that games could be filmed and copyright laws could be broken.
Holding up large devices to get a selfie, or a snap of a favorite player or coach, may also restrict the view of spectators nearby.
In 2010, the New York Yankees introduced a policy that prohibited fans from bringing laptops inside Yankee Stadium, and iPads were included in that ban.
Decisions on what can be brought into a football ground in England are a matter for the “relevant stadium management authorities,” United said.
The club will, however, still allow the use smart phones and small cameras inside Old Trafford.

New iPhone 6 to be revealed on September 9th!

apple iphone 6

Apple has scheduled a September 9 event to unveil its long-anticipated large-screen iPhone, the online news site Re/code reported Tuesday.
While reports have been swirling in recent weeks about the new handsets, this was the first with a precise date.
Apple did not immediately comment.
Re/Code said the event would be to announce Apple’s next-generation iPhones, with screen sizes stretched to 4.7 and 5.5 inches and with a faster processor.
Apple sold some 35 million iPhone in the past quarter, lifted by growth in China, but its share of the smartphone market has been shrinking globally.
The research firm Strategy Analytics said the rival Android operating system captured 85 percent of the worldwide market in the second quarter, and is threatening to marginalize rival platforms.
Apple’s global market share fell to 11.9 percent from 13.4 percent a year ago, according to that survey.
Samsung, which has been selling large-screen phones and a wide variety of other handsets, has become the world’s largest smartphone maker with a 25 percent market share, according to analysts.
Apple typically updates its product cycle in the second half of the year, getting a lift from holiday sales.
Last year it unveiled the iPhone 5S and the lower-priced iPhone 5C in September, getting record sales at the launch.
Apple is working on a new operating system which allows for mobile payments and includes a health platform. The system iOS8 is expected to be in the new iPhones.
But some analysts say Apple needs to come up with a new innovation to keep leadership in the tech sector. Reports say Apple is working on a smartwatch and a new interactive television, but the company has said little about this.

Ronaldo Named Second Fittest Athlete after Lebron James

Sports Illustrated (SI) has unveiled the list of the fittest athletes in the world. Some of the top athletes in different sport disciplines have made it to SI’s inaugural list, which was determined based on four unique criteria such as strength, speed, endurance, and agility.
How do the world’s greatest athletes fare with other high intensity athletes? Here’s the top 10.
Athlete (Overall Score)
1. Lebron James (40)
2. Cristiano Ronaldo (38.5)
3. Usain Bolt (36.5)
4. Floyd Mayweather (36)
5. Dez Bryant (35)
6. Calvin Johnson (34.5)
7. Serge Ibaka (34)
8. Adrian Peterson (33.5)
9. Jon Jones (33)
10. Michael Phelps (33)
The fastest man on earth, Usain Bolt, has received an overall score of 36.5 out of 40. Agility, endurance, and strength were the categories where Bolt fell just short of SI’s top two. In 2013, Bolt revealed his rigorous training and diet secrets to Details.com. Bolt reportedly spends 90 minutes in the gym to maintain his healthy and lean physique. As for his diet, he eats healthy food and tries not to eat fast food for long periods.
Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is at the second spot. He scored 10 in three categories including speed, endurance, and agility. He fell short when it comes to overall strength.
King James claimed the top spot. According to SI, no other athlete deserves the first place other than Cleveland’s prodigal son. He scored a perfect 10 in all four criteria. “James has the build of Malone and the speed and agility of Iverson.” For his stamina, James has played a total of 1000 games in 11 seasons averaging 40 minutes per game for his basketball career. SI said that James is the only athlete who can get away playing other sports and excel in them.
Other athletes who made it to the list include top-ranked athletes in the sporting world of tennis, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who are positioned at the 31st and 20th places, respectively. Semi-retired Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighter Georges St-Pierre is the second mixed martial artist on the list. St-Pierre is at the 25th spot. Another UFC fighter Jon Jones has made it to the top 10 behind Minnesota Vikings’ Adrian Peterson.
